Molding rock like putty is impossible. Rock may be cut or crumbled or chiseled or chipped, but it can’t be pressed into different shapes like play dough.
True, unless your name is Jose Manuel Castro Lopez, a Spanish artist. Like a wizard of old, Lopez holds sway over stone, molding it, bending it, layering it as if it was play dough. He transforms hard rock, quartz and granite, into miraculous sculptures that cause you to doubt your eyes, even question your sanity.
Inspired by the folklore of Galicia, a community located on the Iberian Peninsula that was assimilated by the Roman Empire in 19 B.C., Lopez has a mystical connection to stone. He explains, “My relationship with the stone is not physical, but magical. It recognizes me, it obeys me… we understand each other. My stones are not lifeless. They manifest themselves.”
