At Top13, we are glad to showcase the artworks of creative people from all around the world, and today we have the pleasure to present a very young girl who is already showing her talent and definitely has a bright future ahead as a professional artist.
Kate Louise Powell is a rising artist from West Yorkshire, UK, who creates marvelous drawings that combine elements of nature and human figures. She had the courtesy to grant an interview for Top13, which we share below along with some of her drawings.
How did your interest for drawing started? Was it motivated by someone in particular?
My uncle bought me a ‘mega-sketcher’ for my birthday when I was a toddler and I drew on it all the time, copying from nature books and such 🙂 I was praised by my mum and dad and they encouraged me to never stop practicing.
How long does it take you to complete a drawing in average?
Depending on the type of work I’m doing my drawings take anywhere from 2 to 50 hours! The average drawing takes about 5 or 6 though, and I work on them in bursts of 30 mins or an hour, so it sometimes feels like longer.
I feel like I have a lot of control and I can articulate my thoughts better than through paint or photography. It is the medium I have practised most and although it means I feel like I’m often ‘playing it safe’ I know I can achieve my most successful pieces through pencil, it’s addictive.
Would you like to explore other artistic genres such as writing, sculpture or filmmaking?
One day I definitely would. I want to get my degree in illustration but after that when I’m more free I’d love to make some films. I recently watched a documentary on the films of Tacita Dean and I found it really inspiring.
How would you define beauty?
Nature, uniqueness, confidence, happiness, acceptance.
What do you do when you are not drawing?
I like reading and watching things and ticking them off ‘top 100’ lists. I’m a massive bookworm, I’m always reading about 5 books at once and finish at least one a week, I’m so hooked on books. I also went vegan last month and spend a lot of time trying out fancy new recipes.
Do you have any pet?
I have three cats, Rhubarb, Custard and Mrs. Simon. Rhubarb is like my child and best friend simultaneously. I feel lost when I go to someone’s house and they don’t have pets.
Do you use models when you draw human or animal figures?
I used to use a lot of photo references but now I try to draw from my mind or use myself to draw from, I’d like to get out there and take lots of photographs for first hand research, it would be a fine excuse to go find some great animals and plants.
What message do you have for Top13’s audience?
Don’t worry, believe that you are brilliant, practice what you love and don’t stop, read Murakami books, eat more fruit and veg, work hard and be nice to people.
About the Artist
Kate Louise Powell, from West Yorkshire, UK, is a young artist studying Foundation diploma in Art & Design at Leeds College of Art. In 2012 she began taking her artistic career seriously and produced many popular illustrations with the recurring motifs of flowers and butterflies. She has experimented with mixed media, photography, and paint, but still works mostly in pencil, although she now aims to create more personal and emotive portraits. Kate wants to produce work that is a greater expression of herself whilst continuing to include the theme of nature and questions of beauty. By 2015 she hopes to be attending a BA/BFA course at university and then wishes to pursue a career in fine art and/or illustration.
