Sometimes the most amazing things start from the humblest of beginnings. That was the case with Mohammad Alaa Jaleel, who started taking in a few strays and caring for them. He knew that these homeless cats would struggle as they fled Aleppo, Syria. It didn’t take long, however, before he had far too many cats to care for on his own.
In order to ensure that these cats were cared for properly, Mohammad founded Il Gattaro d’Aleppo in 2015. This sanctuary for homeless cats now is a home for about 80 of those felines. He cares for them beautifully and they flourish under his watchful eye.
“When people left, the cats started coming to me. They were stray cats and cats left by their owners. Some people just left them with me knowing that I love cats.”
You will find many friendships flourishing among the felines at this sanctuary. There is one particular friendship, however, that is more than unusual, it is beautiful. Animal lovers from around the world have taken note of this friendship and are spreading the word on social media.
Mohammad is not only caring for felines, he also brought a stray dog under his care as well. This stray was pregnant and he went so far as to give her his room so the last part of her pregnancy would be comfortable.
It wasn’t long before this stray dog went into labor but all three of her puppies were stillborn. One of the volunteers in the sanctuary, Alessandra Abidin, realized that the pup was struggling. That is when they brought in some teddy bears to provide some comfort for the loss.
The comfort actually came from a most unexpected source, Junior.
Both Junior and Amira came to the sanctuary about the same time. They developed a friendship and the maternal instincts of the mother started to kick in very strongly.
At first, the teddy bears seem to be the main attraction for Junior but soon, Amira became his focus. It didn’t take long before they were inseparable.
They would share meals together…
They would play together…
Sometimes they would just hang out together…
Junior got the opportunity to practice his balancing skills.
They call the pup Amira, which means Princess. After all, she is a princess to them.
Mohammed is known as the Cat Man of Aleppo. Although his focus has always been on the felines in the area, these two animals serve as a powerful reminder that kindness still exists, even when times get dark.
