There are many people who have a soft spot for dogs but some take things to the next level. That is the case with the individuals who are responsible for Beauties and the Beasts Rescue. They take their time and resources to help out little animals that are not able to help themselves. That is why they responded so quickly when they got a call about a tiny pit bull puppy who was injured because of an attack by another dog.
The puppy had been brought to a local veterinarian so the individuals at the rescue rushed to that area to help. It didn’t matter to them that it was Christmas Eve, they realized that the bite wounds on this dog needed some immediate attention. It had been bitten across his entire body and his head was swollen. To make matters worse, it looked as if this puppy had not eaten quite some time.
This rescue is in Wichita, Kansas and they covered the medical costs associated with this rescue. They also gave the puppy a name, Jonah.
Kristin Seawell, the new foster mom of Jonah said that if a few more days had passed, the outcome would’ve been much worse. Jonah was only 10 weeks old but he weighed in at only 4 pounds. He was so malnourished that his hair was falling out.
Jonah put up a hard fight for his life and he was a joyful little puppy. When his new foster mom and her husband met him he was so excited he couldn’t stay still!
It took a few days of specialty care at the veterinarian but he was cleared to go home. The Seawell’s are experienced at caring for these special types of cases. Things went well at first but then his front legs collapsed a few days later.
Seawell said that he was walking in the hallway when suddenly, his legs gave out. The veterinarian feels that it was the malnourishment during the first few weeks of life that weakened his muscles and tendons.
The vet gave Jonah supports and braces to help with his front legs. It didn’t take him long to get used to them and he used them to his advantage when he wanted a snack!
One of the biggest training points for the Seawell’s has been at feeding time. He sits and waits while they prepare his dinner but he continues to tap his paws on the floor while he is waiting.
Jonah continued to make progress and he started to feel better within a few weeks. The extra food and braces have helped Jonah but he also gets love from his new sister, Ariel.
Ariel was also a rescue dog. She found this new home after being rescued by Beauties and the Beasts. She was so mistreated by her former owner that she is now missing a leg.
Ariel was used as a fighting bait dog and she was covered with scars. Her mouth was closed with barbed wire and she had one leg cut off. These two seemed to bond on a very personal level.
Since Jonah was attacked at a young age, he was afraid of other dogs. Ariel helped him to find his comfort level. When another dog would bring Jonah a toy, he’d protect himself. He had a hard time trusting at first but Ariel taught him to play.
Jonah has been with the foster family for one month and he has almost recovered. Now he is looking for a forever home after he gets the clearance from the veterinarian.
Until he finds a forever home, Jonah will represent Beauties and the Beasts at local Wichita community events. He will be helping to inform others about the work that saved his life.
“Jonah is here because of [the rescue],” Sewell said. “This week, he’s going to an event for a local Girl Scout troop to teach them about what to do if you find a dog in trouble — and they’ll get to hear his story.”
