Gerhald Acosta was required to leave his work earlier and was walking home from work when a good Samaritan offered to give him a lift.
It wasn’t until he got into the car (a 1987 blue Volkswagen Beetle) that he realized that the driver was actually the President of Uruguay Jose Mujica accompanied by his wife Lucia Topolansky.
“When I got out, I thanked them profusely, because not everyone helps someone out on the road, and much less a president.”
The humble president even allowed him to take a couple of pictures during the journey.
President Mujica and his wife are highly respected for their simple way of living.
He once acknowledged that his 1987 Volkswagen Beetle was his only asset. He lives a minimalist life in a farm that is in his wife’s name.
He donates the most part of his $11,000-a-month salary to homeless charities.
When asked about his position, Mujica declared:
“A president is a high-level official who is elected to carry out a function. He is not a king, not a god. He is not the witch doctor of a tribe who knows everything. He is a civil servant. I think the ideal way of living is to live like the vast majority of people whom we attempt to serve and represent.”
I’m not interest in politics, but I think this man deserves a lot of respect and the majority of the world’s leaders could learn a few things from this man.
