When this white pine bonsai was planted in 1625, probably no one expected that it would live to see such a historic event. It was owned by the Yamaki family, who in 1945 lived only two miles from where American forces dropped the bomb that ended around 140,000 lives. Miraculously, the bonsai, and the Yamaki family, were left unharmed, and this incredible little tree continues its life even today.
It currently resides in the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum, where it was donated by Masaru Yamaki in 1976 as a gift to the United States. The bonsai’s connection to Hiroshima was largely unknown until 2001, when Yamaki’s grandsons explained its origin while visiting the museum.
