From time to time things happen that put us to the test, revealing who we really are. Daniel Veerman is a 53-year-old attorney who has just gone through that experience. Daniel was devastated when Chester, his daughter’s hamster, escaped while cleaning his cage, and had a panic attack in the messages he sent his daughter while looking for the little animal.
Luckily, her 19-year-old daughter, Steph, took the news philosophically and shared the conversation on Twitter to show how pure her father’s heart is.

Steph said his father is usually the opposite of what he seems in this situation: conservative, Catholic, lawyer and quite strict, but his weak point are animals and babies.
“My father and I have always gotten along very well. My parents are divorced and he doesn’t miss anything my brother and I do. We have a strong bond.”
What made the escape so unexpected is that Chester is very calm. He reminds me of a cat, because he is always calm. Chester has never bitten anyone and is very docile. He and my father get along very well, especially since my father feeds him while I’m in college.
Although Steph assured his father that nothing was wrong and it wasn’t his fault, Daniel didn’t accept the loss, and he had a panic attack. Daniel started taking care of Chester a couple of months ago, when Steph had to go back to college in Boston.
“At first I didn’t like it very much, I grew up with German shepherds. When he came home he was like a mouse, not my first choice as a pet. But then I became fond of him, especially because I was taking care of him for my daughter.”
“It was a nightmare, I called him, shouting his name, thinking maybe I knew his name. I was looking for him with a powerful flashlight.”
During those terrible hours, Daniel would not stop writing to Steph, to let her know that he was still searching. “I couldn’t sit all day, I was going crazy. I set traps, recreated his cage in my office, took out his toys and his treats and put them around. I thought that if I didn’t find it, at least it wouldn’t die because it had food.”
Finally, Daniel found Chester “next to a book about President Nixon.”
“After nightfall, I saw him running on the floor. I thanked God, came back and saw him on a book, washing himself, so I grabbed him.”
Steph says she hasn’t changed her mind about his father after the incident: “I know he has a big heart and would do anything for me, this proves it even more.”
