Back in 2015, the British Trust for Ornithology started The Bird Photographer of the Year competition, which gathers photographers from all around the world who dedicate their professional efforts into portraying the majestic lives and actions of birds across the globe, a task not easily taken on.
Not only is the work of the contestants amazing but the BTO does remarkable work as well, using these awards, as well as profits from the annual photography book they publish as a platform to raise awareness on bird conservation efforts. This year’s winner is Alejandro Prieto Rojas, a photographer from Mexico who captured a portrait of a flamingo feeding her young birds.
The winner of the contest each year gets a cash prize of £5,000 (or 6500 USD) and other members of the shortlists for the awards get smaller cash prizes, equipment and merchandise.
