A few years ago, a caring cat took it upon herself to care for a pair of baby squirrels she found in her owner’s yard. She brought them in through the cat door and treated them as though they were her own baby kittens.
Mary Cummins, the cat’s owner revealed the importance of her cat’s act of kindness:
“Many years ago, my cat rescued two baby squirrels from the yard. Trying to find them proper help is how I became a wildlife rehabilitator. My last house had a totally enclosed yard with eight foot fences. I had a cat door going outside. Mimi first brought in one baby. My other cat, Boots, tried to take the baby, but Mimi protected “her” baby.”
Mimi continued to care for the two babies until Mary was able to find them a rehabilitation shelter.
Inspired by her cat’s unexpected kindness, Mary chose to get her own rehabilitation and animal rescue permits so that she might help animals in need as Mimi had done.
