Baby Cottontails Rescued
After a tragic drowning of a mama cottontail, six tiny newborn cottontail bunnies with their umbilical cord stumps still attached, did not have much hope in surviving. People found the nest and performed a rescue rather than leaving the babies. The six baby cottontails were taken to A Soft Place To Land in hopes they would survive. A Soft Place To Land is a wildlife rehabilitation center in Graham Washington. In addition, these six little cottontails were covered in tiny ticks, and things didn’t look good.
Future Looks Bleak
Jasmine Fletcher Glaze, founder and wildlife rehabilitator told Dodo “Unfortunately cottontails are extremely difficult to successfully rehab when they are this young.” She wasn’t confident that any of the baby cottontails rescued would survive due to their age. Then something miraculous happened. Glaze’s husband found a new cottontail nest in their own backyard. There were already bunnies in the nest, yet there was room for two more.
Jasmine took 2 of the baby cottontails and snuck them into the nest in their backyard. Mama bunny didn’t even notice and day after day Glaze checked on the bunnies to see that they were, in fact, being fed. Each day those two baby cottontails got stronger and began to grow. They were adopted by a mom who fed and nurtured them until they were ready to leave the nest. Finally, those juvenile bunnies left the nest and can look back at the love a strange new mama gave them unconditionally.
